The Future Of Treating Mental Illness

Low-cost, accessible, evidence-based care exists!

In the last mental health piece I wrote, I spoke about how the epidemic of mental illness can be addressed in far more efficient and effective ways than just raising the number of psychiatric professionals in the industry. Undoubtedly, more ‘boots on the ground’ doesn’t hurt. But it’s time- and cost-prohibitive to train up psychiatrists. It’s also frequently disproportionate in terms of severity. Stated differently, level of care or intensity of treatment factors into how attainable help is.

So I spoke about some initiatives that have been put forward by legislators making mental health services far more accessible. Just one of them is coaching. In this article, I will discuss a program that is having enormous success here in Canada.

If you’re not following me yet (you should!), I’ve been basing these mental health discussions on a book that was published back on May 4th. It’s entitled, We Can Do Better by David Goldbloom. He’s a professor from the Univeristy of Toronto. Therein, I learned about an incredible program which developed out of the maritimes over the past decade.
